I did think they would not be to everyone’s taste, the skill of the artist is excellent. The sailing barge is most likely to be a Thames sailing barge that were very common up until the 1950 , in the 1800 a lot transported hey , fire wood , coal etc up to London and took goods back to East Anglia etc. they also brought bricks , and building materials and took rubbish away .
Still some preserved and sailing in races, carrying passengers on sight seeing tours etc.

I must admit I had never heard of Frank Scarborough. His paintings are very skilful and capture times past on the river- a very different busy world and way of life and work. He doesn’t try to romanticise any of that and I find them interesting in a historical sense.
Thanks for the intro Dixie. I think we couldn’t have had two more different artist styles and subject matter than this week! Most of this is of course the difference in times but underlines the fascination of art and what artists choose to paint.

I agree Tessa his work does reflect everyday life on the rivers and seas , but to me that’s what art is about.
These day we use cameras to achieve the same think all be it in a different way. A lot of artist like Scarborough were recording the everyday life and thank goodness many have survived time . Due to spending time researching artist fir this thread , to fill in the weeks when we done have offers from the forum , I have come across lots of excellent artists who’s work is superb and yet they are little known. My one hope is that people enjoy the thread and gain some pleasure from the artwork on offer.
Please do let me have more for the list , I will keep the thread going as long as people want me too.
Arecibo you happy with two artist a week , my thoughts were that I would give a chance of looking at the work, without feeling rushed but I would welcome your views and opinions, polite ones only please .

Wasn't familiar with Frank Scarborough's work but I can see why you like him Paul and Alan.I do enjoy looking at this type of painting especially 'in the flesh' as there's so much to see, little details that are easily missed at first glance and of course it's a glimpse back to a different age.

I am fascinated by these paintings by Frank Scarborough, I have not come across his work before so thank you for bringing his work to our attention Dixie. I presume they are watercolours, they're very skilfully painted, and I would be interested to know, how he achieved the highlights of the gulls and railings on the ships/boats, would he have used white gouache?

Hilary it great to hear your enjoying the artwork and that you have joined in the discussion asking a really good question, I’m sure others have gained from it . Alan has lots of knowledge of artist and the methods, materials used and thankfully is always willing to share it with us.
Thank you for answering Alan, not just this question but the many others that you help with. That’s one of the great thing about this forum , no one seems so precious that they cannot share information and knowledge with each others.
