Thank you Alan I did take it as a compliment. As soon as I noticed his painting I liked them and did think they were similar to my paintings, but didn’t want to compare them myself . His website is quite good and he explains how he became interested in ships etc , also some very nice paintings that are not maritime related.

Some proper boats there! Old work-horse vessels for the most part, so much more fun to draw (as I used to do and have lost every single one of my drawings!) than more modern ships: though they have their place too.
The Hokusai has always been a remarkable painting - you know it's a highly stylized rendition of the sea, but it still has huge power - its strength, contrasted with the fragility of the boats, is almost intimidating; a painting of which I never tire.
PS - I do admire painters who can make water look wet - as Sorolla does, for example. Lesley Dabson, who used to show her work here, is another: I've never found it comes naturally to me; I think I can manage trees, grasses, landscape generally, I'm sure I could paint a mountain - we just don't have a large variety of those on the Isle of Wight - but though surrounded by sea, I've never yet been satisfied with my attempts to capture it: still, if you WILL compare yourself with the best, you ARE likely to be disappointed!
