I have only been painting watercolours for just over a year but I have over the years dabbled with them but never managed to paint with them sucsessfully but now I do feel as though I have mastered the medium.

Ian, being older than you are I can say that my experience with problematic skies is far away. However I can come with some good advice here. If you are painting in Acrylic or Oil, just cover your complete painting with a Cadmium medium red in Acrylic. Whatever you will paint on top will become a new discovery. Give it a try.

Cheers Patsy, Only when they're finished are they going into the Virtually art Gallery, yes its a shame the blog images cannot be enlarged. I suppose I don't want to clutter up the site with a lot of part-finished images... (not that I'm saying its wrong... Its just at very low res - folk can't tell where I'm going wrong too much). I'll have a play with this taking in you comments - cheers again. Ian.

Hi Ian I don't think its the sky particularly more than the sense of distance isn't there...the hill to the right facing me needs pushing back as does the little one on the left...perhaps some blueish purpley tones which are used to push places in a landscape into the distance...the sun coming from behind the hills has a hard edge maybe diffuse the light upwards somewhat...this is of course only the way I see it...are you posting in the gallery we can get a bigger image there and perhaps see it in a different light...put them into the portfolios they are in alphabetical order and easier to find...I made a right mess last night trying a new technique for painting rocks...thank goodness it's acrylic and be painted over...good luck with your painting I like it
