Award-winning contemporary landscape artist, Lucy Marks, AROI, ARWS, presents a solo exhibition of new paintings at the Royal Watercolour Society Gallery this autumn, following her sell-out show in 2022.

The exhibition, Times of the Day, revolves around light. Lucy will display 70 new works that study and capture the play of light on the landscape and urban settings from dawn to dusk and at night, as well as the different moods and atmosphere that light creates. Lucy paints in both oil and watercolour, both of which are on display at the show.

Each painting will highlight the dynamic impact of light and how its fluctuations can influence colours, shadows and landmarks. In addition, works painted at night will focus on inky tones of darkness and differentiations of low light. These paintings exude vitality and immediacy. This is combined with a deep understanding of colour and in this case, how hues interact with a tonal palette, enabling Lucy to use layers of colour combined with fast brush strokes.

Inspired by stunning locations in the UK and abroad, most of the pictures have been painted by Lucy en plein air. Working directly from the subject, Lucy finds herself out in all weathers and seasons. By working alla prima, she responds directly to each scene which gives a freshness to her work. Whether painting in oil or watercolour, smaller intimate en plein air works and also field sketches enable her to scale up to larger works. Up to, 2-metre-long paintings are then created in the studio.
