One Medium or Many?

I think I should probably post more of my work on my other blog, www.wightpaint.blogspot.com (and just have: go and look and comment!). I've put so little up there, relatively speaking, that anyone looking at it is going to get a rather lopsided idea of the kind of thing I most usually do. At the moment, I've been painting a preponderance of watercolours - which really isn't my preferred medium, though I would always want to work in them at least now and then. I'm best at acrylic - trouble is, I like a challenge, and watercolour is a huge challenge for me: the great thing about acrylic and oil is that you can change things to your heart's content: if a line's in the wrong place, if a figure doesn't work, if the horizon line is on a vertiginous slant, you can just paint over it. In watercolour, you've got to take much more care and time. Which, of course, we all know. The question that occurs to me, though, is this - is it a good idea to try diversifying, and working in all media, or a better idea to specialize in what you're best at? I've never really answered that question to my own satisfaction. I say "all media": but of course I don't really work in all media at all - eg, I don't print, or use scraperboard, or gouache, or tempera: I do use coloured pencil, and pen and ink, but not in any very serious way, ie to produce finished work, but rather as sketching media. But I do paint in acrylic, oil and watercolour - and from time to time wonder if that's not trying to have my cake and eat it; to be a bit over-ambitious; and more to the point, to confuse my (rather small!) market....... These are fairly daft questions, since I've no intention of stopping painting in oil and watercolour.... but - well; it'll kick off a discussion, maybe! It being unlike me to fail to offer an opinion, I'll answer my own question - I don't believe in specializing in medium any more than I believe in specializing in subject matter; I know people do, and do so successfully; perhaps the true professional does settle on one medium, and has but occasional resort to others. But - I just don't want to! And the older I get, the more wilful I become..... I do, however, think that I should be doing a lot more painting, whatever the medium, and be making more of an effort to promote it ... and if I share that with you all, it puts a bit more pressure on me to get off my plump but comely bottom and get on with it. Anyway - go and look at www.wightpaint.blogspot.com, and if you keep going there, I'll keep posting (how can you resist?) And don't forget, while there - buy, buy, buy! Bye-bye.
