A pictorial alphabet of favourite places around England – S for Southwold (2)
A pictorial alphabet of favourite places I've sketched and painted around England

The timeless feel of Southwold and its neighbouring towns along the Suffolk coast has much to do with its geography. The only North-South road, the A12, is several miles inland and half a dozen rivers flowing into the North Sea along that coast, with their neighbouring marshes, have proved a deterrent to road building along the coast over the centuries. So all the coastal towns have to be approached from the A12 along narrow country roads, with little or no direct connection. As an example Walberswick is only a couple of hundred yards away from Southwold harbour, across the River Blyth, but it is only accessible by a foot ferry, a long walk over a footpath bridge upstream, or an 8 mile road journey. My painting of Southwold harbour entrance from the beach shows the huge Sizewell B nuclear power station in the distance, dwarfed by the modest harbour wall, such is the nature of perspective.
