A pictorial alphabet of favourite places I've sketched and painted around England

Sidlesham Quay sml

Sidlesham is another of the attractive little villages on the inlets of Chichester Harbour. Records date back to the 7th century and it was a port in the 13th century but its bay is now more marsh than water and the main occupation is market gardening, with lots of extensive glasshouses in the local fields. Its only claim to fame seems to be as the site of the earliest mention of cricket in Sussex. Ecclesiastical court records in 1611 state that two parishioners of Sidlesham failed to attend church on Easter Sunday because they were playing cricket. They were fined a shilling each. History aside, the views of the old buildings across tidal marshland provided much material for my travelling sketchbook.
