A pictorial alphabet of favourite places I've sketched and painted around England

Little Hucklow, First Day of Spring

Little Hucklow is a hamlet in the Peak District near Tideswell. Just a few farms and cottages remain from its thriving past as a lead mining community. It is a linear one street community, aligned east-west, and is surrounded by pastoral farmland and dry stone walls. The hillside opposite is the site of an Iron Age hill fort where a gliding club now operates. Sadly, the hamlet has no shop or pub, the Bulls Head pub claimed to be the fifth oldest pub in England before it closed in 2005, since when it has become derelict. My picture was painted at home from photos and sketches done on a walk around the area, but I could have painted it on the spot, from the middle of the road, it was that quiet.
