A pictorial alphabet of favourite places around England – I for Iping

A pictorial alphabet of favourite places I've sketched and painted around England.

Iping is a small West Sussex village near Midhurst and the South Downs. We stay there each year and it’s our base for walking and exploring the inlets and villages of Chichester Harbour It’s a small hamlet with no shop or pub, but the church and water mill are listed in the Domesday Book and the Georgian cottages, farms and narrow lanes make an attractive walk to the nearest refreshments at The Glasshouse, a garden centre cafe half a mile away. There are great views of the South Downs from the fields and footpaths around the village. These sketches were made with my “travelling kit” of an A4 sketchbook, pencil, 3 fibre pens, small 12 colour paintbox and 3 brushes. Iping Common, a mile away, is a 310 acre SSSI and nature reserve, conserving a rapidly declining habitat, and providing miles of heathland tracks to walk. HG Wells’ novel “The Invisible Man” is said to be set in Iping, but having read part of it, I can see no resemblance!

Thank you for those comments, Graham. I do find keeping a travelling sketchbook just as satisfying as painting "proper" watercolours.

I think it is an excellent idea to 'document' a location in paint over the seasons in a similar way to a photo-essay. The pictures are also very well done.
