Brian Smith

Biography

I am a Sheffield-based professional artist working primarily in watercolour but I sketch from life prolifically in all sorts of media to hone skills and preserve memories, and I enjoy dabbling with pastels. I run three structured courses per week in watercolour, provide 1:1 tution, co-run life drawing classes at Sheffield's Millennium Gallery, lecture in freehand drawing skills at Sheffield's Hallam University and deliver workshops, demonstrations and painting "surgeries" - fast track problem-solving sessions on any subject - to Art groups and Societies. As a former architect, buildings and what goes on in the spaces around them are of particular interest to me but I find any subject can attract my eye and commissions can take virtually any form. My workload includes Architectural Illustration, Art & Design Residencies in schools, Book Illustration, Calligraphy, Corporate & domestic Caricatures, Cartoons, Fine Art, Graphic Illustration, Greetings Card Design, Jigsaw design, Landscapes, commercial and domestic Murals , Portraiture and Product Illustration. I have recently begun to contribute articles to Leisure Painter. The areas I work in will no doubt be confirmed as I start to build my gallery
