Crocus Bloom, watercolour on NOT watercolour paper, (23x30cm)
Practise two essential watercolour painting techniques as you learn how to paint crocus blooms with Karen Rice.
This is an easy-to-follow watercolour painting demonstration, using just the three colours listed above, beginning with light washes, followed by mid-tone washes and finally the darks and details.
Alternative colours are:
- Cobalt blue
- Permanent rose
- Lemon yellow
The simple composition will allow you to concentrate on the techniques as you work light to dark using a limited palette.
The techniques
Here is a summary of what you need to know before you begin:
- Wet-in-wet - The surface and the paint are wet. This allows colours to blend together easily to create soft edges.
- Wet-on-dry - The paint is wet, but the surface is dry, creating a hard edge – a characteristic of watercolour painting – and more definition.
- Milky wash - the consistency of full fat milk.
- Creamy wash - the consistency of single cream.
