Are you an oil painter, a watercolour painter or paint only in acrylic? In this article Steve Hall urges you to move beyond your comfort zone as he demonstrates the same picture in oil and pastel

'Over the last two decades I have predominately painted in one medium – watercolour. However, I think that a little experimentation can lead to new horizons. To support this idea I thought it would be fun to move outside my own comfort zone and demonstrate to you in watercolour, acrylic, oil and pastel. I must confess that I actually started to paint in oil and acrylic over the last year but pastel is a whole new world to me.

'When I first started to paint in watercolour, I bought all the books and videos that I could find on the subject. The result was that I became totally confused for, although the messages were often similar, each artist their own style. Eventually, I decided to pick the style of the artist I most wanted to emulate, which in my case was Edward Wesson, and tried to understand how he went about the art of painting in watercolour, hoping that my own style would eventually emerge – which it did.'

My pastel challenge

'As I embarked on a whole new challenge of painting in pastel, I intended to seek inspiration from the pastel painters I most admired. Jack Merriott, Earnest Savage and John Blockley inspired me but I am also excited by the vibrant contemporary work of Tony Allain.

'What I did want to avoid was too much rubbing and smudging, preferring to let strong shapes and line tell the story. Some blending might be acceptable but I am strongly against the ‘pretty’ pictures that too much overworking of pastel can produce.'

'Looking back to some of my archived studio work from last year, I noticed that I had also painted this scene in watercolour and acrylic. I have included copies of these pictures here (below), so you now have an example of all four media.'

'Unusually for me, I have got the subject and composition in my photograph about right first time, although I decided to leave out the vehicle in the distance so I could make more of sunlight at, what I considered to be, the focal point.'
