'My formal training as a technical and scientific illustrator led me to paint in a photo-realistic way, as I studied and drew microscopic detail to recreate my subjects exactly,' says Les Darlow.

'Developing as an artist over time, however, has taken me down a completely new path, where I now concentrate on simple, yet powerful designs. Today, light, energy and movement are more important aspects of a painting for me.

'As I approach a subject, my first job is to sketch using a 4B pencil on white paper. This is done to build the design, using simple tonal values to balance the composition and keep the viewer engaged. Spending an hour or so on this really helps me to get to know my subject and design really well. I usually create three or four simple composition and tonal sketches then often create colour palette ideas, which help enormously with my understanding of the painting and therefore help me to create with passion and expression. Tonal value is often more important than colour, because the combination of light against dark is paramount to a strong painting.

In The Golf Course (see demonstration below), I wanted to show how to paint the beauty of light on a simple snowy landscape.

There is no detail to worry about so you can concentrate on those elements that make a painting come alive.

The Golf Course, Unison pastel on indigo Mi-Teintes Touch paper, (14x47cm)

'The Golf Course was inspired by the beautiful snow we had in 2010. Believe it or not, Blackpool actually got some! So I spent as much time as possible sketching, painting and taking photos for future work – and, of course, just enjoying being out in it.

'When painting with pastel, I mainly use the side of the stick, especially for those larger areas. I suggest therefore that you rip off the wrappers and start to block in simple directional shapes. As always, try to keep it simple. Have fun playing with colour and light, and shake off the stress that preciseness can produce. Let go, be expressive and creative, and concentrate on the main elements of painting.'
