Mont Saint Michel is a city island in Lower Normandy and has become a wonderful example of the pyramidal nature of feudal society with God at the very top, then the abbey and monastery and then the great halls, stores and housing below that and at the bottom of the pyramid outside the walls were the fishermen and farmers housing.
