I used to sail a lot with a friend on his boat based out of Port Bruce on Lake Erie. We had a ton of fun day sailing and occasionally we would go on a longer cruise of several days usually over into USA waters. It was a time when the US was not as hyper-concerned about illegal entry. When we entered a port, we’d find the local club that had reciprocal privileges for an overnight berth, call the customs office to let them know we were there and that was it. While we never entered races I still fondly remember those cruises and especially the overnight sails when the weather cooperated.
