I made no real attempt at likeness in this portrait, but rather tried to express the inner man. A poorly educated Irishman, one of ten children, he served thirteen years a s a full time soldier, fought throughout the war, was at Dunkirk and returned a man ravaged by illness, who would never talk about the war. He carried on working as a labourer to suport his family and died at just 52 years of age,worn out.. A tee-totaller, his only dream was someday to return to Ireland and sadly, that dream was never fulfilled.He was my father.,
