I have a love of Magnolias and living in Cornwall this is one of the first places they appear in the Spring.I live not far from a tropical garden where there are a wonderful collection of these magnificent flowers and I spent a day sketching them only to complete this portrait in the studio.My father used to read me a poem about magnolias which I have never forgotten, I don't know who wrote it but I have tried to show the essence of it in the painting."Magnolia like a stranger stands stiffly all alone,I think a word would change her into a flower of stone."
