This reminds me of a novel by Nina Bawden - The Birds in the Trees, as I remember. If you've read it you'll know why: the inscrutable depths of youth comes as near as I can get to explaining what I mean; with or without autism as a complicating factor - sometimes one has to fight to understand. A superb trytych (spelling decidedly optional) anyway.
