The good thing about art is there are no rules. As long as you enjoy it. some of my abstracts are almost all black

This is a great piece of work Sian. I love the shapes and I love the BLACK ! I use black from the tube all the time and nobody can tell me not to do it. It's your painting, your canvas, your paints and your rules!!!! You have learnt so much over the year so just keep painting and enjoy. Satu

Yes they used to say that because if you used a tube black in a conventional painting it can be too stark and mixed with other co;ours as a 'darkener' it can dull the colour, so they tend to prefer to make it combining ultramarine with raw umber but in abstracts black is great. I use it all the time so do what works Sian. Art is your own expression. If it works for your painting, do it. If it doesn't, try something else and enjoy the journey! Jx

13.6.11 50 x 50 cm mdf. I have been told never to use black, especially from a tube . . . . so here is my first painting using black ! ! It is also my first one that is totally abstract (not sure I like that) and I have experimented with stippling etc. I think (hope) my application of paint is improving. But as it is the largest painting I have done it will have to live under the bed!
