I LOVE IT SIAN!! You are improving very fast! I'm very proud of you. As for the greens mix them yourself then you get what you are looking for. Kind regards Satu

Oh, I do know what you mean about pthalo Green.... there are many others, of course; veridian tends to be softer, although veridian in acrylic isn't actually veridian, if that makes any sense; Oxide of Chromium is duller, more opaque; Sap Green - varies hugely between makes, though the Winsor and Newton version is interesting; olive green - well: SOME people like it...; but as Satu says, mixing your own gives the most controllable and characteristic (of you) greens: try veridian and raw sienna; Prussian blue and burnt sienna; Ultramarine and Cadmium Yellow; Prussian, or Pthalo Blue (green shade) and Cad Yellow, or Lemon Yellow... Cerulean and a different range of yellows, all giving very different results. Then try mixing Naples Yellow with any blue and see what you get: some extremely odd colours, but also several useful ones...

I think this is lovely too Sian. Why not do another one on a different fruit theme? Or I have heard that if you mix greens with a small touch of their opposite on the colour chart ( eg a shade of red) or with an earth colour (the umbers or siennas) you can get a more subtle green. Jx

Thank you Satu, Robert, Jean. I will expeiment using your ideas. This is my first picture to be shown in an exhibition - Castle Quay Weekender, Bedford in March 2011.

Hello Sian. Thank you for your comment on my painting. It is 355mm X 450mm in size - framed. This painting of yours caught my eye - because of the pthalo green - I love it. An interesting painting and I love the light turquoise.

26.1.11. 30 x 40 . phthalo green, yellow ochre, cadmium red, cobalt blue. Katy is a lucious red apple and the quince is always covered in pear-shaped fruit. The elipse near the centre represents a Bramley apple that I left out of the picture. ( Now the experiment is done I never want to see phthalo green again ! Though I guess I will finish the tube. Can anyone suggest another green?)

I always find it interesting to read about the rest of you. I gave up art when I had to chose between it and maths at 'school. I then gave it a go when I retired and have found it a fascinating hobby, enabling me to view with new eyes, to visit art galleries with greater interest, to sometimes haveā€¦
