This is a 16” x 20” portrait in oils, on canvas board, of Leonard. Leonard sat for a portrait session for the Hull Art Circle. When he saw the final painting he said “he didn’t realise how old he looked to people” but considering he is nearing his 99th year I personally don’t think he is doing at all bad plus he managed a two hour sitting, which is certainly a credit to him. During his halfway break I managed to talk to him and he told me of his fascinating life at sea so I thought it appropriate to include the seascape background to his portrait. I produced a monochrome oil sketch at the life session and used this and photographic references to complete the portrait.
