Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem
Situated within the old walled city of Jerusalem, the site on which the church is built is venerated as Golgotha (Calvary), where Jesus was crucified and is also said to include the place of Jesus' burial. It is also therefore considered to be the place of Christ's resurrection and is an important place for Christian pilgrimage. Today, control of the building is shared between a number of Christian denominations and secular entities under complicated arrangements which have been unchanged for centuries. The original church was built in 326AD at the command of the Emperor Constantine, who directed his mother, Helen, to build churches on sites which were connected to the life of Christ. It is said that Helen was present at the construction of the original church.
