Rugged and very successful painting: oil pastel lends itself to this treatment, although generally speaking I don't get on with them: is this painted on toned paper?

Hello Robert, thanks for your comment - much appreciated. This actually on thick card - the end piece of a watercolour pad possibly - and I didn't prime it, hence its slightly tinted background. I usually use oil painting medium with oil pastels but I didn't with this because I thought it might just soak in and make a mess!

I'm the only person in my local art club who ever uses oil pastels - and Jim, who runs it, shares Robert's view and hates them with a passion! I really enjoy them, although I've learned to choose my subject carefully. You have done a really lovely job with this landscape.

Thank you so much Bobbie! I like them because they are immediate, like when you are drawing, but give you a painted finish. Hope that makes sense! It also helps when I feel too lazy to clean brushes! I agree, they are not something I would use if I were trying to be too precise. Thanks again for your comment, much appreciated.

I love oil pastels too Sarah , I agree you need to choose your subject. I also use the end boards, hate waste. This has worked well!

Thank you very much Katy for taking the time to comment!
