The "Payne's grey" background contrasts very well with the yellows and oranges and strengthens their impact. Payne's grey used in a figurative sense only! Together with interesting shapes makes a pleasing composition, say I!

I can see the abstract element to this painting - it is very interesting in style. Lovely colours and, like Colleen, I like the choice of the cool grey for the background.
