I like the contrasting warm colours in the foreground.

Roger this is beautiful, and like yourself, I love it as it is.

I can see Alan’s influence Roger. Must admit I struggled with the title until I read through your explanation!

Well I’m not sure that you’ll learn an awful lot more from myself Roger, you already produce some very accomplished work. Good balanced composition here, strong tones and super complimentary colours, those foreground tracks are incredible! You’ll need to introduce some of those same colours into the foreground trees of course, I’d call this a good first sitting, and take it several stages further!

Thanks, everyone. Thanks, Alan. I will take it further but don't want to lose the vigour. It helps that you've said take it further.

I’d be very happy if that was my painting

Terrific painterly look.

Really expressive winter painting Roger.

16" x 20" acrylic underpainting. This winter I've been looking at, and trying to learn from, the work of Edward Seago and Alan Bickley. I chose another photograph from Christmas Eve 2010 at Kenyon to work from this afternoon. I'm very pleased with the freshness of this underpainting. I'm even considering leaving it but I think I'll continue and aim for a simple, painterly oil. In case I ruin it, I'm posting this stage now.
