Nice one Val - I particularly like the way you have handled the trees

I do love your gouache paintings Val, full of colour and so original in their execution. Like Michael, I think the trees are wonderful.......almost arts & crafts style. How's the new computer working out?

Hi Fiona like it a lot it great .will have a go at gouache myself .

Lovely crisp lines and beautiful colours., The foliage behind the buildings has such depth. Great painting.

it looks good to me I love gouache

Very nice, Val, and the colour is super

I like this Val, the palace sits well and I love the colours against the greens of the trees.

Good textures with gouache and I like the style used.

Thank you everyone for your generous comments, much appreciated.

There's something about gouache which is instantly recognizable (if you get it right, of course..) - a creamy look, which is very appealing. I don't know this building - palace? As in, bishop's? Or do all you Scots live in palaces....

Missed you posting this Val; site must have been busy. As you know this is my favourite ever place to visit and this is a wonderful painting of it. Robert you haven't lived if you haven't visited this place on the far side of the Firth of Forth. The rooms are roofed like a ship wit the most incredible mediaeval paintings on the wood. The owner was the owner of a coal mine under the Forth and the first to invent a ventilation system. It's more a manor house than a Palace and is absolutely wonderful and one of the few places where the guided tour is well worth it to unlock teh secrets of the house and garden. The cafe next door is pretty good too LOL

Thank you Robert for taking a peek and Diana has explained what this place is perfectly. Culross is well known for it's crow step cottages and quaint streets and is usually busy with artists on the warmer days. Yes, we do get some here occasionally LOL

Thanks Diana. The cafe you mention has a large loft above it accessed by an outside stair and the arts assocation I belong to had an exhibition there the summer I joined in 2005. A great place for an exhibition as Culross gets lots of visitors. The other cafe nearer the town hall, which is a pottery and art gallery as well, do lovely chocolate brownies...........

Absolutely love this, Val!! Quite a stylized piece but I like that about it. It is different, interesting and has super structure. Really great work.

Many thanks Thea.

Culross Palace in Fife, Scotland painted in gouache. For those of you that don't know it the building really is that bright ochre colour, it's not just my usual overstated love of colour LOL. Thanks for looking.

About the Artist
Val Kenyon

I am a self taught artist or, as I like to say, I'm "unrestricted by formal teaching" which probably explains my mish mash of styles. I paint in most media, watercolour, gouache, oil, coloured pencil and my favourite, soft pastels. I'm inspired by the Scottish landscape, nature and animals and…
