This is so fresh and modern. I love its simplicity, It's a very intelligent looking duck!

Love this one Val, he does look very modern, thanks for introducing me to The Glasgow Boys as well, for 'old blokes' - they rock!!!

Lovely stylized painting. I really find the contrast between the very white duck and the intense green of the grass very pleasing. Also, echoing the white of the duck in the little daisies really works in this painting's favour and makes a charming composition.

Thank you Lynne, Debs and Thea. Thea, how is your exhibition going?

Lovely bright duck against the darks, great painting Val

Amazing how modern it looks, Val. You did a good job on that and I am glad you are out of your painters block. Keep on painting!

I love this, Val! I agree with Thea - the contrast of the white against the greens is really brilliant! And the daisies really make the whole painting utterly charming and delightful.

Full of fun and I agree with the others, it's got a real modern feel to it. Love the daisies.

Great piece Val and like you I am a great admirer of many of the glasgow boys works so when it gets you painting again after suffering painters block the results can be very rewarding like this . The other one of Joseph Cranhall's watercolours that I like very much is " THE AVIARY, CLIFFTON " 1888 .

Thank you Glennis, Mia, Seok, Fiona and Graham for taking the time to look and leave such nice comments. Graham, I remember seeing that one and liking it , also I think he did one of pigeons on a roof as well. Not a popular subject for a painting but I liked the colours he'd caught in the feathers.

Love this Val. I'm rambling on a bit, but have you heard of Mrs Delaney? (circa 1800's) I have a book of hers. She used collage to beautiful effect, mainly flowers though. This reminded me of her work.

I painted this last year when I was stuck for inspiration. The original by Joseph Crawhall, one of the "Glasgow Boys", has always been a favourite of mine. He painted his in gouache on linen, my version is gouache on Saunders Waterford. Painted around 1895 I've always felt it had quite a modern feel to it and could easily have been painted today. Thankfully it got me out of painters block, for a while anyway LOL

About the Artist
Val Kenyon

I am a self taught artist or, as I like to say, I'm "unrestricted by formal teaching" which probably explains my mish mash of styles. I paint in most media, watercolour, gouache, oil, coloured pencil and my favourite, soft pastels. I'm inspired by the Scottish landscape, nature and animals and…
