Acrylic on large box canvas. I chose this as a night scene once I took some photos during the day I returned at night to get a feel for what the night scene could look like. For those not familiar with the history of this bridge it is in fact the 2nd Tay Rail Bridge the first one collapsed in a storm on the 28th December 1879 just 18 months after it was built. At the time it was the longest rail bridge in the world but due to an unfortunate combination of dodgy workmanship and the only hurricane recorded in the area in recent times coinciding with the 7.15pm train from Edinburgh disaster struck the train plunges into the icy waters below along with the high girders killing 75 people on board. The bridge rebuilt alongside the original completed in 1887 and still stands today. Returning to get the feel for this painting at night its a creepy eerie place as the huge structure rises from the waters edge. Not a place to hang around at night time. Although it was daylight, sunny and calm I turned it into a fury of crashing waves with the city of Dundee in the background. What I am kicking myself about is that I forgot to paint in the stumps of the old rail bridge which are still prominent.
