It might look different in the flesh - perhaps you can see into the darks better - but I do find that foreground segment a bit too near to black; the trees and further background work very well, though. And we're always telling watercolourists not to be afraid of the darks, so the idea was good, the contrast works (it certainly makes you look at it) - maybe Neil will do another version, with a little more colour and light in the dark, without losing the start difference. It would work very well as an oil painting or acrylic, too....

Neil Walker sent in his version of Paul's challenge saying: 'I started in the usual fashion of playing with the light tone first, then worked my way through to the dark areas. Quite an interesting challenge as I’m not used to woking with watercolours but will continue to play as they have proved to be great fun. Feel that I may have lost control in the dark tones but do love the contrast and strength that they give the painting.'
