Noel J. Kendall sent in his version of Paul's challenge saying: 'The photograph and challenge in the January 2017 issue of The Artist looked a bit dull which challenged the artist to bring out the best by way of colour. Often the scene will decide for me which medium to do a painting in and this particular one screamed out to me pastels. Snow is difficult to do as whites can loose there brilliance in oil, acrylic and watercolour but in pastel the colours stand out hence my decision. I used cheap lilac coloured card which wasn’t the best to do pastels on but I wanted this background colour specifically for the sky and shadows. After making a brief sketch of the general lay out I used a mixture of white and pale lemon yellow to tone down the distant sky. Next I filled in the trees with emerald green over layered with black and at the same time highlighted the fences and outlined the stone. To get the colouring of the stone I initially put in the lighter surface with orange then
