Another painter of clowns was Harpo Marx - some of his work is still available online; you might be interested to take a look. You're quite right about sketches - know when to stop, and I should say that you chose the right moment with this one: you have a strong image, and it doesn't need to be overworked.

I felt like doing a sketch although it was quite late so I was glad to finish it before midnight. I probably could have gone further with it but with sketches you need to know when to call it a day.
