Oil on canvas. I stopped using the reference photo for this some time ago. I usually use a reference to get the shading correct but soon discard it. I like to invent a person who does not exist except in my idea and in the world of art. Much of the time the people i paint cease to look western as the picture progresses. I've no explanation for this but there's probably something about my style and manner which often makes the faces seem more Eastern or at least more southern.
