Wow, lovely work Michael, I like the crisp contrasts and how you've managed to capture the different textures of stone, snow and water (if water has a texture... but you know what I mean). The trees are great. I hope you don't mind a thought - I found my eye was taken diagonally top left to bottom right quite a lot - the lines of the snow shadows match the lines of the clouds, and I wondered if it might create more variation if some of the snow shadow lines were more horizontal, for example? Or perhaps if they still went diagonally, but the other way, i.e. in the direction of bottom left to top right? I think it might slow down the 'journey' through the painting, if you see what I mean. I agree with you about Payne's Gray. If used carefully it doesn't have to deaden a scene, as you've shown here.

Lovely work Michael, unusual choice of palette but it works well here. The cloud shadows stand out on the snowy landscape, I can't remember seeing that in a painting before.

Very pleasant scene and beautifully painted Michael.

Lovely trees Michael. I agree with Caroline re design. As a struggling amateur I think I might have put the foreground on the right hand side to give some balance and just a tiny tuft on the left thus giving a lead in. My eye is taken away from the cottage.

This is stunning Michael! Love everything about it, the cottage is a lovely warm spot in it's relatively cool surroundings. I really like the wash you have used on the trees is that mainly p. grey and ?

Lovely painting Michael, Just hope the snow stays away from here, its only good in paintings.

lovely painting, Michael.

Thanks all for your comments and suggestions.

Superb watercolour Michael!

Very successful - it looks 'right chilly' in your painting.

Stunning work, Michael! Really love this piece - it has atmosphere in spades.

I'm really grateful to Alan Owen who generously invites us all to have a go at his superb postings. Well this is based loosely on the composition of one his - so thanks Alan. Colours used are limited to : Paynes Gray (yes and I love it for this kind of scene), Ultramarine, light red and a bit of ultramarine violet.
