Keep going! I like your loose style. As for portraiture have you tried gridding to get the basic drawing? It works and is a good way to start. Suggested palette for flesh colours would be Titanium white with raw umber or yellow ochre plus a small touch of a red to warm it up; either burnt Sienna for a 'weather worn look' or alizarin Crimson for an English rose complexion or cadmium red for a ruddier complexion.
