Im not a great admirer of Turner. Line is almost completely absent in much of his work and in my opinion he resorted to artistic trickery to achieve his results, such as using a stone he found on a beach to apply his paint which had an ingrained pattern on the bottom. He was original for his time. I painted much of this by daubing paint on randomly then whipping it with a kitchen towel.

I am also very skeptical about the impressionists contempt for bougereau. I think their attitude had more to do with jealousy than anything to do with their claim that they and not he were pushing art forward. Forward to what? Pollock and Rothko. To me thats not a progression but a downgrade.
