You could, if you wanted to, call this John Piper-ish too: but for one thing I see nothing wrong with that, and for another I think you've brought your own vision to bear on the painting. So far as I'm concerned by the way, to be compared with John Piper is just about the highest praise you can get.

I have to confess that any comparison of my work with that of John Piper is very flattering! I admire his ability to capture the spirit of a place with such spontaneity and freedom in his use of colour, mark, texture and form - be it representational or more abstract in nature. I have 'borrowed' some of his approach to painting and tailored it to suit my needs and ability, just as he 'borrowed' the techniques of painters before him, such as Palmer, Cotman, Cozens, Blake, Turner and many others. I hope he wouldn't mind too much...

This medieval castle ruin is located in the market town of Helmsley, North Yorkshire. Originally it was built in wood around 1120. Now in the care of English heritage. Painted on the spot. Mixed media on 230gsm paper. 15" x 11"
