Well, you won in the end! Sounds as if your paper was heavily sized - it's not easy to find the perfect paper for you, but it'll be out there somewhere. This is a very appealing painting of one of our most persecuted wild animals, not, sadly, that they're alone in that.

I fought the HP watercolour paper, which I used for greater detail, all the way for this painting as the paint just seemed to slide off it! Hope it was worth it in the end!!
