"I'm sure it was driftwood I saw" in line and wash.
After heavy rains inland, it is not uncommon to find "timber" on those beaches close to river mouths. Ranging from fence posts through to tree trunks. In this case a root mass and my imagination saw more than just roots. This was on Foxton beach which is an hours drive from where I live.
