Love the painting and love the info! I haven't heard of that expression.

the dags really do rattle when the sheep run around. Usually a farmer will "dag" the sheep before shearing occurs. The sheep are brought in for shearing and their backsides are checked out. Dirty bottoms are removed and dealt with.. Shearing then proceeds more quickly if the shearers are just taking off the wool. Thanks for the comment MC

a not uncommon sight over here - a unit dedicated to the removal of accretions round a sheep's back side. From whence comes the saying " rattle your dags" meaning get a move on.
