British Rail 9F Locomotive
Charcoal on paper. This is only the second time I ever tried a picture with charcoal - always just used an ordinary HB pencil before. Going back to my boyhood love of steam railways, this is a British Rail 9F locomotive - that was the last class of stem locomotives commissioned by British Rail prior to deciding to do away with steam. What I love about steam engines as a subject for drawing is that even with such a sophisticated and technologically advanced bit of kit as this one, there's so many interesting lumps and bumps. While with a diesel engine it's just a box with some wheels.
