Gorgeous capturing of this vintage three wheeler Lin, super work

Lin, you have posted some interesting and good work recently, very worthy of comment. However, I have to confess that I am finding it hard to want to leave my comments now after reading your warning on Kris Mercer's painting. I do think that accusing members (some of whom are now writing nice things about your work - all problems forgotten on their part) of 'spamming your paintings with vitriolic comments' is inappropriate and rather ungrateful seeing that you were the one who made the mistake in the first place. I have been a member of this site for nearly 5 years and I have never seen anyone take the attitude that you appear to be taking. Do you intend to give this warning to everyone who strays over the limit by a couple of paintings just so that you can get another opportunity to have a go at those who just tried to remind you of the posting guidelines. Time to get over it and put it all behind you now.

Thea, I know I got off on the worng foot, but I really think it is a site problem and I have posted elsewhere that I understood that, as it has happened in te past both innocently and purposefully that it is an issue and I wouldn't want anyone else to fall foul of the design of the site. It was added merely to discourage the poster from making the same mistake. I had to try to emphasise the situation as some people may just take no notice. It wasn't meant as a personal dig to you or any others. To be honest I don't think any of us should be doing the job of the webmaster. And no, I do not intend to do it to all posters. IKt is all behind me from a personal point of view. I think, that we should be lobbying for a change in design and the monitoring of such things by the webmaster so that we dont' have to strain our interpersonal relations. And I do appreciate the feedback that I am getting. Please don't take me 'wrong', with my comment to Kris it wasn't meant as a dig.

Lin, I appreciate your reply and the fact that you have very kindly left comments on three of my paintings. It is of no use lobbying for any change on POL as the site was set up with technology that is now outdated and there are certain facilities that they cannot incorporate now. It is a huge undertaking to change the whole site and I don't think they have the resources. I also know that the powers that be at POL are extremely reluctant to make hard and fast rules about posting limits, preferring recommendations, partly because they don't like to dictate but mostly because the site set up does not allow them to automatically remove postings over a limit. I did object to your use of the words 'spamming' and 'vitriolic' as they are very strong words and I don't think in anyone's terms that leaving a comment can be construed as 'spamming' and I didn't see anything that could have been called 'vitriolic'. People were just frustrated. In the past we had one chap post 75 paintings in an evening and the whole site went into meltdown and many people still remember this. We regularly get people posting over the limit and if it is just a few, then no-one really bothers. It is only when it gets excessive that the problem starts. In the final analysis, the annoyance value is the same whether the poster does it deliberately or in error. We also have had cases when the poster clearly wants to just use the gallery as their personal exhibition area and they couldn't care less who they inconvenience. So, when multiple posters appear on the site, no-one is totally sure which category they fall into - the innocent mistake maker or the deliberate liberty taker. When you get no response to entreaties to stop, then I think that it isn't a big step in starting to believe that the person is the latter. It has all been very unfortunate and perhaps it is time for everyone to now step out of this arena and get on with the business of enjoying painting and posting. Best wishes, Thea.

Thanks for the explanation and story behind it all Thea. Much appreciated. I've been sticking to 4 a day. in fact I haven't even sorted and posted any today. I've had rather a non-productive day altogether. It helps to know the situation and the back story. Thanks again

Some further information that might avoid some angst in the future. Anything you load into your portfolios will end up on the gallery pages. Many people, including myself, would like to re-organise their portfolios, but can't do this without all the paintings they move turning up on the gallery again. No-one is keen on paintings appearing more than once on the gallery as each re-posted painting takes up a space that could be better utilised for a completely new work. People do this on occasion but it isn't popular for obvious reasons. I personally think that the posting guideline limit of 4 a day is way too many and think that 1 in 24 hours is more than enough. We did have someone not long ago who posted four a day, every day, and to say it was tedious was putting it mildly. There is something to be said for keeping your audience wanting more and over exposing your work definitely doesn't do this. I post on average about once in two weeks. Mind you, I have only been painting for just under five years so don't have a big backlog to put into portfolios and only post current work (because it is all I have got!). The other problem with this posting guideline of 4 a day is that when people do post four, people just don't bother to comment on all of them. They might put a comment on one or two, but the others get ignored and I just can't see the point of posting under these circumstances. Surely people post to get feedback and if none is forthcoming - then why bother? Even although an artist may choose different subjects to paint, they will have a style which runs through their work. People also seem to get a bit jaded with seeing a lot of work in the same style and have a much better reaction I find when I new work comes out of the blue, on it's own, and it seems to have much more impact that way. This is only my very personal view, but I have been on this site for nearly five years and after that long you do start to see what works and what doesn't.

Thanks for the advice Thea. I am only usually 'active' a few hours a day so have been doing things with a routine, first on - linemessages, then organising life stuff, then as it approaches meal time, I pootle around on sites and forums. This is when I try to sort out anything and post it up, so that after dinner, if I feel well enough I might actually get some painting done, or drawing. Some days this isn't possible so I just linger around in cyberspace. I need to keep myself organised so that I dont' get lost. I have most of my stuff on Facebook, where only my friends get to see it. I'm forever being told to 'branch out' but I don't have the stamina. I've been encouraged for some time to start a blog, and I want a link wher eI can direct people to look at work and post feedback, without me having to have them as FB friends. (I'm trying to keep that for actual 'friends'). I like to do different things in different mediums, and I've yet to develop a style. I like to 'do as I feel' and keep it varied so as to avoid becoming too 'samey'. Although they always recommend to the pros to do similar work for galleries. What i'm trying to do here is create galleries so that those who prefer a particluar genre can follow that etc. I'm trying to build it all up slowly. Then i'll link to it. I'm not really expecting too much in the way of comments and I have been pleasantly surprised that I am getting so much. It's lovely. I really, honestly, would not expect comments on every piece. It's nice to have though. I've decided that (depending on my activity levels) to try and space my 4-a-day out. This way I am still building up my gallery, but not 'hogging' the front stream or becoming tedious to some of you regulars.

I'm also trying to find time to go through and comment on work by others. I know how fast the stream works and so I go up to about page 5 and post on ones that grab my attention. Once I've uploaded and built up my gallery, trust me, I will slow down significantly. I can take weeks for me to finish something. i have oils I started 5 years ago! I'm not very quick! I may however, have good day and finish a few that have been lying around.

Hi Liz, another nice study piece, never used the inktense pencils or sticks hopefully someone may buy them as a Christmas present, my list is getting bigger and bigger. Thanks for you lovely comments on my latest pencil work. i am extremly new to pencil work, but am finding it very exciting. i know have derwent coloursoft, artist and studio pencils, but have a very long way to go to master them. with regards to the support, i am just getting going. yes i have only done the CP work that is in my CP portfolio i have a lot to learn. re your question regarding Derwent paper, yes I quite enjoyed them, also the cartridge paper was enjoyabl

Hi Liz. Sorry for cutting the last posting short, but my I pad fell over, and as I grabbed it, I'd realised that I must have pressed the reply button. To continue the conversation, I am now trying mount card. I'm finding my biggest problem is managing to achieve depth in colour and overcome the waxing problem, but I will get there. My wife, who indecently is also called Lin, has also purchased a full set of FC Polychromos pencils for her parchment craft, hopefully I can try them. Regarding the UKCPS, are you a full member, as I can't see any of your members details or a portfolio. I do find the forum extremely informative and am looking forward to next years exhibitions. Hopefully I will get to the Patchings to see the current exhibition. Thanks again for your comments, looking forward to seeing your future posting. Regards Pete.

Peter. i started with Winsor & Newton Med grain heavy weight cartridge paper. It takes a lot of layers and it is pretty tough. Derwent Artists ahve a lovely colour range. Studio are great for detail and Coloursoft for blending.

Lin forgot to mention, rearranging my portfolio. Checked with the webmaster, this cannot be done electronically, as I had only 5 pictures to repost, thought I'd do before I had to many CP pictures. Did it in 2 stints so as not to cause to much heartache with other users, the comments have to be copied and pasted onto the new posting individually. Best wishes Pete

I am a full member Peter, I just haven't got round to filling in my portfolio.

Lin has always enjoyed expressing herself through words and pictures until life got in the way. In her teens she painted semi abstract dream like sketches inspired by record sleeve art by Roger Dean and Hypgnosis in her bedroom. She again took up Art in 2006 due to poor health and disability and…
