Sorry it’s not worked out Lew but you gave it a try rather than just give up . I like the characters and think they look fine but it how you feel about them that’s important.

I agree with Paul, you are always good whatever the medium

I think they look spot on

Oh Lew, that’s disappointing. But there’s nothing worse if the enjoyment isn’t there. Don’t know about rough but they look spot on to me. Is it because you’re wanting precision, which you get more with pens etc? You can get that with oils but how about something more impressionistic?

Sorry to hear about the difficulties, but the results are great.

Thanks for your comments. Marjorie...as shown, they are much smaller than the paintings, and do look better than they are. Making these was more of a struggle than a pleasure, making all art has it's frustrations, because I always think I could have done better. (Most of us do) For instance, the three stripes on the sailor's uniform...I messed them up with my wobbly hand, painted them out twice, and gave up after the third attempt, which you see above. I will try again, but I'll be expecting a lengthy process.

Whatever you use and do Lewis always entertains us however you create your art. But it has to please the creator firstly. We can only look in awe at your wonderful skills.

Enjoy the medium you are most happy with Lewis, your work is always top notch.

No matter what you use Lew , you do superb artwork.

They look good to me Lewis, but I think we all find the medium we are happy with and enjoy using. I keep trying with watercolour but can find it frustrating so keep going back to pastels and pencils.

Sorry to hear that, Lewis. but they're way better than I could manage!

That’s a shame Lewis, as the same with your work in other media, they look brilliant to me!

Looks really good to me, Lewis - you never disappoint with your work!

Thanks again for your encouraging comments, always appreciated. I expect I'll be working mostly with pencils, pens and a little watercolour. I just admire oil painting, and I will try again.

Maybe have a go at the oils just now and then Lew and get too consumed with it. Easy for me to say I know! I’ve admired and laughed at your excellent drawings for some years so hopefully will continue to do so. I didn’t touch oils for about thirty years, could be more actually. It’s always a challenge and my left (painting) hand is not as steady as it was, but I persevere and try to adapt with various tweaks and leaning on. Hopefully you will continue and find a way.

That should obviously read ‘don’t’ get too consumed! 🤷‍♀️

It’s good to try different mediums. Makes you appreciate your favourite. Your work is always funny and accomplished Lewis. This painting is great. Perfection is over rated but those stripes look perfect to me. Just enjoy your work as much as we enjoy your results and don’t be too critical of yourself 🌞🌞🌞

I wouldn't be too disappointed Lewis, not with your drawing ability. Looking at the terrific examples of your work from your sketchbook on the forum and in your portfolio, I can't see how paining them in oils could improve upon them anyhow.

I like them Lew and sorry that you found it frustrating. Especially like top left.

These look great Lewis. I know what you mean about wobbly hands - I couldn't paint a straight line to save my life, just have to remember the words of Alwyn Crawshaw when he used to be on TV "it's all part of it".

I think they are great Lewis. Whatever the media your work is always super.

If you hadn’t told us, I’m sure none of us would know that you had problems with the paint and brushes. The beauty of acrylic is that you can always paint over it for corrections and with oils, you can always wipe it off. I have even used pencils over my paintwork at times.

Up to the 1980s I used oils and acrylics. Thought I'd try again. But I have a hand condition that makes it difficult to use brushes. Couldn't use them, got annoyed with myself. (mahl sticks etc, didn't help). But I had a go. At the moment, I can still use pencils and pens, where the hard point is firmly on the paper. I may try oils again, but for me it's a lengthy, frustrating process.
