What memories, smog and sweet rationing. Thank goodness for the clean air act which had a profound effect. Your superb drawings certainly evoke distant memories.

I'm sure that your family will really appreciate your efforts Lewis. What a gift!

Smog and the sweet shop near our school. It's all coming back to me and honestly, when I spot one of your 'growing up' paintings, I actually lean forward in my chair to look closely with a smile on my face. I study them in detail, they're so good, so true and so entertaining!

Thank you Stephen, Carolyn and Louise for your kind remarks. As this is about my family I was a little unsure about posting it...but I guess a lot of us shared the same experiences. Louise, from the start I knew I'd have to use a quick sketchy approach or I'd never finish it. So I'm glad you like the drawings.

What memories Lewis, I remember the ration book! Your family will treasure this gift.... so interesting.

What a wonderful historical record for your family to treasure. Most of us remember these events so clearly but it’s important that our grandchildren know about them. Living in a rural area, I remember returning from our rare, city visits, filthy dirty with soot coming out of your nose for several days. As a teenager we had to wade through a thick blue haze of smoke in pubs and dance halls. It’s amazing we’ve lived this long. Your illustrations are so accurate and poignant, worthy of great admiration Lewis.

Such evocative memories, Lewis! Great drawings, too!

Such a pleasure to see your history like this Lewis so thanks for sharing it with us. This is another wonderful page.

These really are superb Lewis. Great narrative / nostalgia.

I'd just started work training as a coffin maker so we were very, very busy as you can imagine. Remember walking home and could just about see my own hand in front of me. This is great work Lewis, can't wait for the next instalment.

Bring on the next instalment.

Great memories.

I'm doing this for my family, so it's a bit wordy...trying to cover all this just in pictures would make the book four times longer. I remember these two incidents very well. The 'Great London Smog' of 1952 was deadly...several thousand died, many more suffered. It lead to the 'Clean Air Act', where only smokeless fuel was allowed in London.

About the Artist
Lewis Cooper

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
