I have been Lew, some years ago, and was quite shocked and disappointed to see how the paintings are hung. It must be so exciting to have your work selected and then to turn up and find you need a ladder or cricked neck to view! As ever, you’ve captured an idea beautifully.👍🏻

So well observed!

Excellent work Lew, how you think up these scenes just amaze me then you do a superb job of painting it.

Lovely! Apparently the same used to happen in Paris in the 19th century.

Wonderfully observed and painted.

You have certainly got those pictures right Lewis, say no more. You should submit this one next year.

Great observation and sketch

Satire, wit and art all in one. Another winner. Just can't work out why the RA doesn't have a Lewis Cooper hanging on the wall.

So admire your amazing imagination Lewis. Super humour with lots of truth behind it.

In the late 1960's I did enter a pic for the RA, a friend at the time had entered paintings for seven years. We had no luck. But we did go to the shows. I enjoyed them very much, but lacking a giraffe's neck, there were many I couldn't really see. What brought this on was a visit to the revamped National Portrait Gallery last week, they had rooms with paintings up to the ceiling...again, tough to see. I guess space is always going to be a problem. I know I'd be peeved if after achieving the difficult task of getting something accepted, and then finding it could barely be seen.

Another beauty Lewis. I have often thought, whats the point in hanging paintings so high.

Excellent picture, totally agree with your comment 🙂

Great one Lew! Spotting a painting at that exhibition isn’t easy!

I agree with John, you should enter this Lewis. It is ridiculous having to crane your neck to try and view paintings and as you rightly say, a little soul destroying for the artists. Brilliantly illustrated as always.

Such a clever idea and with wonderful characters- thanks for the laughs, Lewis!

Excellent Lewis

If you've ever been to the RA Summer Exhibition you'll see small paintings tucked away near the ceiling. This must cause mixed feelings for the artist riding on the joy of being accepted in the first place. Sketchbook - pen-watercolour.

About the Artist
Lewis Cooper

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
