If I knew how it would turn out....

wouldn't make it

By way of explanation...Cindy Sherman is an American Artist who makes surreal photos of herself using make-up, weird props, and prosthetics. She can appear as a glamour girl, or a deformed harridan. I get what she's saying, I think. But I see two options. First you don't know for sure how the image will end, it sort of evolves as you go along. I try it sometimes. Risky but fun. But I have some idea as a starting point. Some artists don't. Ralph Steadman, the great English cartoonist/artist manages it. The second option is very familiar...you make such a mess of a picture, you wish you'd never started it.

Generally the latter! Great cartoon Lew.

That's such a great quote and a wonderful depiction! (I'm of the second option school)

Great artwork Lew , the latter of your explanations is me to a tee . I do agree that we never know just how it’s going to look until till it’s finally dried .

It’s a great image Lewis, love the look of horror on his face…”what have I done?”

Great stuff Lew. The joy and pain of the result is worth the uncertainty of the journey

I think we should call the second option 'Lew's Law'. A corollary of which, of course, is that the time to call a painting finished is when the last alteration you made makes it look worse and not better.

Which ever option you go for Lewis, yours is a great illustration.

Great painting Lew , many artists finish a picture only to discard it.

Another good one Lewis, I can relate to discarding pictures part way through or when finished

Lewis the detaisl in this piece just make me laugh. I will look Cindy Sherman up. Thank you

Thanks for your comments. I can relate to both of my options, but the undisputed winner (in my case) is the second.

Fabulous illustration Lewis

Haha, that rings a bell Lewis. Trouble is, most paintings start out well, but then start to go downhill and then there's that awful feeling the more you continue, the worse it gets!

The information is so apt. We never know how something is going to turn out Lewis. Love the horrified look on the chap’s face.

I'm definitely in the second option camp, love her wellie boots Lewis and his paint splattered feet.

Great cartoon as always

Definitely the second. Great expression on his face.

A great cartoon, and I especially like the detail of the holey red socks hanging on the pipes!

No chance of this being one of those, Lewis - this is definitely one you started and finished well, as are all your works. I always love the expressions on your characters.

Lewis Cooper

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
