You do portraits so very well Lewis. Looks very young here Though.

Super portrait, Lewis.

John...he does look young (I have a bit more to do on it later). In all the best photos he looks young...but we have to remember he died aged 36. This photo is dated 1890, so he was 26 years old, had already painted many famous works, and was firmly entrenched at the Moulin Rouge. One year later than this photo, he'd produce arguably his most famous painting...the poster of the Moulin Rouge. It employed his own innovative lithograph techniques and catapulted him to fame.

Great start. The portrait is so clear and fresh. Look forward to seeing it finished.

Good job so far, looking forwards to the rest.

Brilliant Lewis! I so agree.. it's best to do the hardest bits first, I always do...my bin's fuller than yours!!! Lol!

Very impressive Lewis.he looks more handsome than I imagined him to be.

Brilliant image, you have caught him so well 😀

Interesting start Lew, plenty of Moulin Rouge characters to fill that space.

Just roll it on Lew. Whatever you do is class and this is an excellent start. Great work.

Brilliant portrait Lewis, I like it as it is!

This looks really good Lewis, can't wait to see the finished piece.

Yes that is Lautrec. Very good.

This may seem an odd way of working to those who like to work on the whole picture from the start. I prefer to work this way, though not always to this extent. I wanted a portrait of Lautrec (from a photo), if I didn't get that right I'd have to start again, so I didn't work at all on the rest of the painting. It will be characters from Lautrec's posters and paintings. As usual, once I got underway I immediately began to think of other ways to do it (maybe better, maybe not). But I'll press on.

About the Artist

Self taught. Love drawing. Like to make pictures up, without using reference pics, often in cartoon style. I do other pictures where I do use reference. I'm knocking on a bit, born in 1940 in Greenwich, London. Retired, and loving it.
