Please please Pat... FLATFORD mill.....!!!

Works really well - particularly like the sky.

Pat, Pat what can I say.... Humble pie and all that. Am soooooooo sorry. Checked and found you are completely right. . So clever clogs me is not clever clogs at all ... Abject apologies...:-(

Poor Sylvia - always go to Google first, then post..... But I'm sure Pat won't mind. If I could make one suggestion here, it would be that you keep a similar tone throughout the painting; the warm and mellow tones of the foreground, especially in the water, are dominated by a particularly baleful sky; you get away with it because the blackest cloud is low on the horizon: if it were higher up, the light would be wrong. As it is, I think I'd tone it down a bit: maybe mix the greys in the clouds with burnt sienna and ultramarine, rather than ... let me think, what would you have used here? At a guess, Payne's Grey, or even Black. MANY people wouldn't agree with me, but I'd never use any kind of black or tube grey in the sky - not in acrylic or oil, anyway. I concentrate on the sky because of course it sets the mood. The drawing is good, water well indicated; like the streaks of light coming from the left, scale and proportion. Constable's painting is huge, of course - up to a point (and this is no criticism of Constable!) - the bigger the painting, the easier it is....

Oh...oh...I am still crawling around... Xxxxxxxxx

Thank you all for your comments. Robert in particular has given me some very useful advice. The sky is not quite as dark as it appears in the photograph but I agree I should refraign from Payne s Grey in the sky. Sylvia take care of your knees. Not to worry about getting the wrong mill. Before I corrected the spelling I had twisted the R and turned Stratford into Startford.

I love the sky Pat!

Very elegant water and you have achieved a strong sense of distance.

Very dramatic and atmospheric. Nicely done, Pat.

Once again thank you all for your comments.

Hi Pat love this painting espcially the sky and the lighting, love the rest of your gallery and thanks again for your comments on my gallery very much appreciated.

The painting shows the river at Stratford Mill as painted by John Constable in the 19th century. I was fascinated by the beautiful setting and I tried to employ light and shade on a much smaller scale than the original work. The acrylic painting on Hahnemuhle fine art carton is just 13x18cm in size while the original oil on canvas is much larger with 127 x 182.9 cm. The connoisseur will easily detect the differences. You are welcome to let me know your thoughts.Constable s works can be seen in the National Gallery in London.
