First look put me in mind of ancient "cave paintings" Kevin, but I totally agree about the use of exercise sketching. Nice work.

Once more, thanks to everyone for the positive feedback. Gosh, looking at some of your galleries I've got a long, long way to go! Hopefully though, my art will start improving as a result of the constructive criticism, and encouragement this site affords one. In the weeks and months ahead I'm hoping to tackle a few canal boat projects. Thus far my attempts in this subject matter haven't been a success but I'll get there.

I do these loose brush exercises as a doodle more than anything else. They're quick, and I can do them with brush and ink, or watercolour, or acrylics, and even oils. I find it helps me with my understanding of brush work and teaches me a bit about economy of line, and for me to relax before I tackle a more serious project. My favourite animals for drawing in this loose abstract manner are warthogs, wildebeest and gemsbok (oryx).
