Evening

Very restful scene and you’ve captured it well. I have awful issues with greens - arguments with my wife who sees greens differently. What greens have you used please ?

I've been trying to use a limited number of colours based on the palette used by Edward Wesson for his pen and ink work lately Andrew, so I have mixed Payne's Grey and Raw Sienna for my greens, sometimes adding Burnt Umber to darken it more if needed. This is a list of Wesson's colours that I googled: Paynes's Grey (I prefer Winsor and Newton Professional from the tube for the Paynes Grey; it worked better for me than the Cotman pan watercolour that I had used previously), Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna and Raw Sienna. I also include Winsor/Cadmium yellow, Light Red, and Ultramarine which he also used, depending on the light I am trying to achieve. I've enjoyed using fewer colours because it just makes decision making easier and I'm happier with the results. I've just played around with the colours to see what I come up with. Hope that's helpful Andrew.

That is really beautiful! You have captured the evening light so well!!

Good advice Karen. I use Paynes Grey a lot in acrylics, and any major watercolours. I have a small W&N set I use when I am out walking and it doesn’t contain a Paynes Grey at present. I need to mix things up a bit more. Thanks for your help.

Thank you very much for commenting Valerie, Paul and David.

Beautiful work Karen, interesting to read about your colour choices too!

Delightful pen and wash Karen, a favourite medium of mine. You’ve got the balance of ink and colour just perfect. I’ve got a lovely original Wesson hanging on my wall, a pen and wash of Pin Mill, with a couple of spritsail barges as the main focus.

Very effective, Karen. I use W&N Neutral tint instead of the Paynes Grey, because I do not always want the blue tint of Paynes.

Beautifully handled pen and wash Karen. Lovely variety of greens, natural for the landscape.

Thank you for all your very encouraging comments David, Andrew, Sarah, Alan, Linda, Heather and Fiona. I've not used Paynes Grey in acrylic Andrew but you've got me thinking now. Neither have I used neutral tint Linda, something else to try, thank you. How wonderful to have your very own Wesson Alan; a great subject too!

Thank you Coral.

Dip pen and watercolour 20 x 16cm. I have tried to capture the beautiful evening light over the cliffs near Llantwit Major. From my own photo taken in the month of July.
