Door without purpose

What an interesting story and painting

Gee! The Roman numeral clock has turned out well and this old wooden door that served as a place of refuge from the Vikings in the 10th century! Good and interesting painting of this church tower and the door with no purpose!

Excellent story and a great painting.

Such an interesting story and a great painting to go alongside it. The clock face is super.

Very interesting narrative and very well painted.

Good story John and good painting, especially the clock face

Very interesting and great clock

Well painted curious piece and story

Thank you all for your lovely comments. They have spurred me into posting a pen & wash of the whole church so the door can be seen in context.

All Saints church in Earls Barton, Northamptonshire has a door halfway up it's tower which appears to be completely without purpose. However, I understand that in the 10th century the tower stood on its own and provided a safe haven from marauding vikings. Local peasants climbed to the door by a ladder which they pulled up after them.
